As Covid-19 cases rise again in the United States, the country is also administering vaccines at a faster rate than ever.
US Covid-19 case
More than 63,000 new cases of Covid-19 per day are reported in the United States, based on a seven-day average of data from Johns Hopkins University. This figure is up 16% from a week ago.
White House chief medical adviser Dr Anthony Fauci said on Sunday that the latest increase in coronavirus cases was not just caused by new variants of the virus, and that travel and the easing of restrictions commercial infections were also a factor in the increase in infections.
“What we’re probably seeing is because of things like spring break and the removal of the mitigation methods you’ve seen,” Fauci told CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
Deaths from Covid-19 in the United States
The United States reports a weekly average of 970 Covid-19 deaths per day, according to data from Hopkins. The average daily death toll has been below 1,000 for seven consecutive days for the first time since November.
American vaccines administered
As cases increase, the pace of vaccinations also increases. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported three consecutive days of more than three million vaccine doses administered, including a record high of nearly 3.5 million vaccines reported on March 27.
The seven-day average of vaccine doses administered is now approximately 2.7 million vaccines per day.
United States share of vaccinated population
To date, more than 143 million doses of the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the United States, according to CDC data.
About 28% of the US population has received at least one dose of a vaccine and 15.5% are fully vaccinated.
Among those 65 and older, 72.4% have received a dose and 48.4% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
