ORANGE, Calif .– An Orange County resident and healthcare worker suffered a reaction and died after receiving his second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, his family shared. Whether the two events are related is being investigated by the Orange County Coroner’s Office and state officials.
Timothy Zook’s wife Rochelle shared the news of her husband’s death with the Orange County Registry this week in a call for officials to investigate further into the reason for her husband’s death.
Just over two hours after his final vaccination, which he shared on social media, Timothy Zook had “a very upset stomach and had difficulty breathing,” his wife told the Registry. He was admitted to hospital on January 5 and diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Reports say he tested negative for the coronavirus and was placed on a ventilator. Timothy Zook died Jan. 9 at the University of California Irvine Medical Center Hospital.
Although questions surround his death, his wife wants to make sure he did not die in vain.
“COVID is a much deadlier force than the reactions of the potential vaccine itself,” she told the Registry. “The message is, be careful, take the vaccine, but officials need to do more research. We need to know the cause. Vaccines need to be as safe as possible. Every life counts.”
According to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, a “passive surveillance system,” according to the registry, shows 130 reports of deaths after vaccine administration. There have been 1,330 allergic reactions and 23.5 million doses of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been administered successfully.
More than 13 million people were vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine on Tuesday, the registry reports, and 10.5 have been vaccinated with Moderna.
According to Rochelle Zook, the family does not blame “any pharmaceutical company” for her death. She says her husband loved his family, his job and was thrilled to be vaccinated.
“He worked in hospitals for 36 and a half years,” she told the Registry. “He believed in vaccines. I’m sure he would take this vaccine again, and he would want the public to receive it.”
Tim Zook had high blood pressure, which was controlled with medication, she says.
The Orange County Coroner’s Office is examining the cause of death, saying it is inconclusive. It may take months before toxicology is fully completed.
Carrie Braun, spokesperson for the Orange County Coroner’s Office, says that if there is a correlation with the vaccine in the ultimate cause of Zook’s death, “we will immediately notify the Health Care Agency. of OC “.
California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr Mark Ghaly is also looking into the incident.
“The details are complex and deserve further investigation, and that is what we are doing,” Ghaly reported on Monday. “The overwhelming majority, however, have seen so many people successfully, and without any significant reactions, receive Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.
Zook is survived by his wife, sons Aaron, 30, Jared, 26, and Kyle, 24.
