The New York Democrat said “white supremacy and patriarchy are very much linked in many ways,” and noted that what she sees is sexualization and violence.
When asked by Bash to clarify if she feared being raped during the storming of the Capitol, Ocasio-Cortez replied, “Yes, yes, I thought I was.”
The MP, a sexual assault survivor, noted that the “misogyny and racism” that “animated” the events of January 6 triggered a similar trauma.
About a month after the insurgency, Ocasio-Cortez revealed her past assault in an emotional live Instagram, in which she recounted her experience hiding in her office during the attack as a man repeatedly shouted: “Where is she?”
“I haven’t said that to a lot of people in my life,” Ocasio-Cortez said after sharing her survivor status. “But when we go through trauma, the traumas get worse on each other.”
