Among the “famous last words” are those of a Union general in Gettysburg: “Nonsense. They couldn’t hit an elephant at that speed… ”In my experience, bridge has two FLWs: one is seven, the second is a suit or an asset.
At seven clubs, South won the first diamond with the ace of dummy and led a trump card to his king. When West rejected, South took the king of spades, led to the ace of hearts, and threw his last heart on the ace of spades. He cut a heart, led a trump card to the queen, and cut a heart.
When West discarded, South didn’t have the dummy entrances to cut a fourth heart and return to the good heart, nor could he cut two diamonds in the dummy. At the bottom one.
MANNEQUIN ENTRY
One heart ahead would beat seven clubs. On a diamond lead, South succeeds by winning with the king. Dummy’s Ace is the extra input he needs to use the Fifth Heart.
Do not bid seven on anything unless you can count 13 tricks in the auction. Too much can go wrong. You risk losing a play bonus as well as a small slam bonus.
DAILY QUESTION
You have: SA 6 HAQ 7 4 2 DA 6 CQ 5 3 2. You open a heart, your partner answers 1NT, you bid two clubs and he tries two diamonds. What are you saying?
ANSWER: If the partner has a mediocre hand with long diamonds – which it could be – you should fold. If he has 8 7 4, 8, KQJ 9 7 4, J 7 6, a winning finesse of heart would give you nine tricks at ourrump. Since the partner might have a little better hand than that, bid 2NT and let him be the judge.
