Berea, Ohio – Once it started I dropped everything and ran.
When Odell Beckham Jr. starts catching passes (in full blocks) from Baker Mayfield, shut up and watch. And that’s exactly what I did. First, it was off the road. Beckham’s dark visor stared at Mayfield.
“Come on,” Mayfield shouted. Beckham went there. Fans, coaches, media and teammates have fallen silent. OBJ’s purple growls (think Serena Williams’ volley) echoed with every tactical step.
Five meters. Shoulder juke. Five more, a roar and then a burst in the other direction. Suddenly he stops, hips lowered, hands raised. A Baker Mayfield rocket smokes it directly in the hands. Catch, rip and sprint for six.
One version of that happened seven or eight more times as teammates sat behind the dynamic hopeful duo. The outs, deep inside loops, and double move stops filled 10 minutes of practice.
They connected with each pass. There was not a single ball placed too far ahead or behind OBJ. The quarterback and receiver have been dialed in and it shows. Like singers in a duet running a studio until the hit record was over, Beckham-Mayfield found his practice tune.
A functioning Beckham-Mayfield could be checkmate. In 2019, Stefon Diggs (then with Minnesota) placed second in yards per target (12), recorded nearly 1,200 yards and scored six times. Keep in mind that Diggs’ career average yards per target is 8.8 yards. Beckham? 8.6.
It can be whatever Digg was in Minnesota, and more. Because unlike the Vikings, Cleveland has a better offensive line, better running backs, and more dynamic tight ends. Plus, the same game caller.
I understand that these are representatives against no one. And my colleagues don’t expect Beckham to play a single preseason game. Therefore, be patient. Beckham and Mayfield probably won’t look like Diggs and Josh Allen in Week 1. But by October, I’m confident they’ll finally play superstar duo status.
As Nicki Minaj once said in her song “Fly” with Rihanna, “Yankee Stadium. The Jays and Kanyes. A Browns fan should remix that.

Here’s what else we learned on Day 8 from Camp Browns.
Browns running game remains dominant
At camp I tend to focus a lot on the perimeter game. It is easier to judge how turns, safeties and pass catchers behave in the cover than it is to estimate the inside of the tracks. However, sometimes a carry jumps and it’s obvious. In Friday practice, Nick Chubb scored a long run outside the zone.
His run on the left sideline reminded me of how great the Browns line is. Wyatt Teller and Jack Conklin sealed the right side under vacuum while Chubb took the lead.
Offensive line coach Bill Callahan installed more than just a zone blocking system last year. By Week 4, the Browns were slashing the teams with spread / power runs, duet blocks, center pull-ups and basically anything and everything.
In year two, with the return of the five starters and Jedi Master Callahan, the Browns’ ground dominance will continue. Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb are the two No. 1 running backs. Jedrick Wills won’t collapse in sophomore and Wyatt Teller was no fluke.
The Browns will win games on the field once again by holding leads in the fourth quarter and clearing the clock. Yes, Beckham, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Jarvis Landry are star guns. But Kevin Stefanski’s most advantageous offense should scare the defenses into stopping the race.
Then throw in deep.

I have watched the game below over a dozen times. I can’t tell if Greedy Williams was trying or not. Was DPJ running at full speed? The celebration of the end zone suggests that this rep mattered. But that doesn’t explain the jogging of all the defensive backs.
I am not sure. But Peoples-Jones always called and caught a long ball for six. An abnormal feat that he accomplishes on a daily basis. It is clear that he is competing against Rashard Higgins and KhaDarel Hodge.
