With Mayor Rick Blangiardi supporting a unanimously supported city council resolution, plans are underway to remove the Haiku Stairs – 3,922 steps climbing approximately 2,800 feet to a ridge in the Koolau Mountains with spectacular views. Among other long-standing challenges related to the site, Blangiardi correctly noted that the Kaneohe residential area at the foot of the stairs “lacks the capacity to provide proper facilities or parking.”
Built by the US Navy in the early 1940s as a route to cable communication sites, the stairs have been officially closed to the public for a variety of reasons for more than three decades. But that didn’t stop the intruders.
Departure of the head of the ethics committee
One of the many appalling developments in recent weeks is the announcement of Daniel Gluck’s resignation from his post as executive director of the Hawaii State Ethics Commission.
It has been a tumultuous year for Gluck, who the governor appointed to the state’s Intermediate Court of Appeals. However, the appointment met with complaints that more diversity was needed on the pitch.
The panel posted the job offer for its replacement (see link on ethics.hawaii.gov). The deadline to apply is October 6.
