Mahalo for his support of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Enjoy this free story!
With all median house prices over a million on Oahu, it’s a relief to see projects that recognize real housing need.
Hale Makana o Mo’ili’ili, planned for Algaroba Street and Makahiki Way, will replace 26 residences in several low-rise apartments and one single-family home, offering 105 units in a new mid-rise of six floors.
Most housing is reserved for seniors earning 50% of the region’s median income. The right mix of nonprofit development and public funding is reason to rejoice – and hope for more.
Captain Kirk walks into near space
William Shatner, who took us to outer space as Captain James T. Kirk in the original “Star Trek”, is now going to near space for real. Shatner launches on Tuesday aboard Jeff Bezos’ spacecraft – oops, sorry, the Blue Origin tourist rocket – 63 miles high, for an 11-minute mission.
Besides being fun and pop culture appropriate, it’s great because Shatner is 90 years old. He will be the oldest person to fly in space, proving that age is not a barrier to breaking down barriers. Have fun up there.
