FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Health officials in North Carolina are studying a possible case of bacterial meningitis at the Methodist University.
Officials from Cumberland County told the Department of Health to have learned Saturday that a university-affiliated person had been hospitalized with "a possible diagnosis of bacterial meningitis infection." They did not specify whether the patient was a student.
Officials said they were coordinating with the school and the state to provide antibiotics to anyone who was in direct close contact with the individual.
The university sent a notification Saturday to the entire campus.
Meningitis is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The bacteria at the origin of the infection can spread through kissing, coughing and sharing drinks.
Signs and symptoms of infection include high fever, headache, stiff neck and rash.
