PROVINCE CITY, MASS. (WHDH) – A Cape Cod community urges residents and visitors to remain vigilant amid recent reports of ‘groundbreaking’ COVID-19 cases.
Provincetown has seen 20 cases, including ten from out-of-town visitors, according to city manager Alex Morse. Several are being watched as breakthrough cases because they are among those who have been fully vaccinated.
“We are aware of a handful of positive COVID cases reported over the past few days among people who have spent time in Provincetown,” Morse said in a statement. “We are in contact with the Ministry of Health and Outer Cape Health Services and are closely monitoring the data. “
Morse noted that it is “inevitable” that cases will continue to emerge throughout the summer due to the many visitors who flock to Provincetown. Almost all year-round and part-time residents of Provincetown are fully immunized, according to Morse.
Dr Shira Doron of Tufts Medical Center said vaccines still offer great protection against COVID-19 and prevent its spread.
“When you compare an unvaccinated group to a vaccinated group of the same size, the reduction rate will be 95%,” Doron said. “Everyone has some degree of protection, so everyone should be vaccinated.”
