West North Carolina sheriff investigator says woman missing for several weeks was found dead in her home, buried in concrete

NEWLAND, NC – A woman from western North Carolina who has been missing for several weeks has been found dead at her home, buried in concrete, a sheriff’s investigator has said.

An autopsy and dental records confirmed that the remains of Lynn Gay Keene, 70, of Linville Falls, were found in the basement, according to the Avery County Sheriff’s Office.

His death was discovered last week after the sheriff’s office filed a missing person report on July 30 for Keene, who had last been in contact with his family in mid-June, multiple reports from hurry. The cause of death was homicide, authorities said.

“She had a blunt trauma to the head as well as a ligature strangulation – it was a belt,” said the sheriff’s detective. Tim Austin told WBTV in Charlotte, 177 kilometers southeast of Linville Falls.

The Avery Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation said a woman hired by Keene’s family to be his home babysitter was a person of interest in the case, media reported.

Sheriff Kevin Frye did not immediately respond to phone messages on Saturday to ask for more details. The High Country Press, quoting Frye, reported that the wanted woman was currently receiving medical treatment and that Frye would issue an official statement on Monday.

Detectives who initially visited Keene’s house had discovered that his car was missing. Austin said he “knew something was going on” after the vehicle was found with two empty bags of concrete in the trunk, according to WBTV.

Austin said he and another detective opened the door to the basement, where a mass of hardened concrete was discovered, WBTV reported. SBI agents broke enough concrete to find human remains inside.

“In my 16 years in law enforcement, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Austin said.
