Officials Report Decrease in Positivity, Hospitalization Rates – Deadline

Los Angeles County slowly eases off the coronavirus outbreak over the holidays as public health officials continue to report fewer than 5,000 new cases of Covid-19 daily.

Public health on Saturday counted 3,254 new confirmed coronavirus cases in Los Angeles, continuing the streak of less than 5,000 new cases daily in the county. While more than 3,000 new cases and nearly 200 new deaths remain grim, the county is in much better shape than it was in January. Exactly one month ago, public health confirmed 14,564 new cases and 281 deaths.

Public Health, which also reported 197 new deaths on Saturday, found that the county has currently seen a decrease in positivity and hospitalization rates since the beginning of February. The county’s positivity rate is down 42% and hospitalizations 37% since Feb.1, public health said.

Detailing the latest tally of new cases, deaths and ongoing hospitalizations, public health warned Los Angeles residents could continue to do their part to fight the virus as the county faces a vaccine shortage . Officials have said that wearing masks, staying at home and maintaining physical distance “are the most effective tools we all have to protect each other.”

As Valentine’s Day and President’s Day approach, public health officials are urging Angelenos to avoid holiday celebrations and gatherings, as such gatherings can increase the risk of contracting and spreading Covid- 19.
