In Youngstown, with the number of COVID-19 cases in Youngstown having nearly quadrupled since late July – from 14 a week to 50 now – Mayor Jamael Tito Brown is enforcing the wearing of masks in all city-owned buildings from ‘today.
The requirement is for everyone – vaccinated and unvaccinated, he said.
Brown made the announcement on Monday with Youngstown Health Commissioner Erin Bishop at a press conference at the Covelli Center, which is one of the facilities where the mask requirement is in effect.
Bishop said she was on a conference call with Governor Mike DeWine early Monday, and DeWine “Really encouraged us to involve our schools in the masking” she said.
She noted that the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown on Friday imposed stricter requirements on students in Catholic schools in the five-county area, demanding masks after some of their schools were only open for one day. The new policy was a change from the policy in early August, to allow parents to decide whether their children should wear a mask.
“As we are seeing the delta variant increase and affect our children, it is really important to do that because children 11 and under still do not have the opportunity to be vaccinated, so we want to protect our children. In the beginning, we protected our elderly, our relatives and our grandparents. Now we have to start protecting our young people ”, she said.
To those who don’t want to be forced to wear a mask, Brown said: “Get vaccinated. Once we are all vaccinated, we will be able to see life a little differently and we will not have to wear these masks anymore.”
He urged other heads of government to establish mask warrants as well.
