CLEVELAND, Ohio – Of the approximately 400,000 cases of the Ohio coronavirus reported since vaccinations began in mid-December, 34 are known to involve people who were vaccinated before they became infected, the Department of Health said on Friday. Ohio Health.
Of those 34 cases, five resulted in hospitalization and there were no deaths, the health department said in responding to a request from cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer earlier in the week.
However, it is not clear how long these people were infected after being vaccinated and how many cases involved people who had received all the necessary vaccines.
To date, at least 3.1 million vaccinations have been initiated in Ohio, with nearly 1.8 million people receiving all of the required doses.
Ohio’s first vaccines were administered on December 14.
“COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective when it comes to preventing hospitalization from severe COVID-19 and death,” a spokesperson said in an email providing the details.
“However, as we heard when these vaccines got clearance from the FDA, their efficacy rates vary, as do their efficacy studies. There is a small chance with every vaccine, just like there is with a flu shot, that despite being vaccinated, you can still get COVID-19. Local health departments are reporting “all cases where a person who has been vaccinated later receives COVID-19 to the Ohio Department of Health.” The samples are being provided to the health department’s lab for “viral sequencing,” the state said.
