Thanks to a huge performance from freshman star Cade Cunningham, Oklahoma State achieved a spot in the Big 12 championship game.
The Cowboys, behind a 25-point night at Cunningham, knocked out seeded Baylor 83-74 on Thursday night at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.
The two teams were in a dog fight for most of the competition on Friday, and Baylor held a five-point lead with just under six minutes to go. With just over two minutes to go, however, the state of Oklahoma has taken a stand.
The Cowboys ended the night with a 10-2 run in the final 2:33 of the game and held Baylor scoreless for more than two minutes in that streak for the nine-point victory.
Cunningham lost 25 points in the victory shooting 7 of 16 from the field. Avery Anderson added 20 points and Rondel Walker added 11 off the bench. Macio Teague led Baylor with 17 points and six rebounds, and Jared Butler finished with 16 points.
Oklahoma State will face Texas in the title game on Saturday. Texas were scheduled to face Kansas in their semi-final game on Thursday night, but Kansas had to withdraw from the tournament after testing positive for COVID-19. His status in the NCAA tournament is now in question.
Baylor should always keep seed # 1
While the Bears didn’t make it through the conference title game, they should still keep the No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Baylor has lost only twice this season, the first being at the hands of No.11 Kansas. That loss, however, came just after a long hiatus from the coronavirus – and four days after a near loss to Iowa State, which has not won a game in conference.
While that will no doubt depend on how the Big Ten tournament plays out – Illinois and Michigan both held the No.1 seeds in ESPN’s latest Bracketology, and Iowa and State from Ohio had seed # 2 – the Bears’ place should be safe.
