Maintaining a healthy heart and reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease involves controlling cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are a type of fat that is found in the blood and whose high concentrations can increase the risk of heart problems later in life. A new study showed that taking omega-3 fatty acid tablets daily could dramatically lower triglyceride levels, but it was a big warning.
The findings were recently detailed by a scientific opinion from the American Heart Association, which states that taking four grams of prescribed omega-3 fatty acids daily can be a sure way to dramatically lower triglyceride levels. The conclusion is based on a review of 17 controlled (and randomized) clinical trials involving high levels of triglycerides.
Omega-3 fatty acids have beneficial effects on health. They are found in products of animal and plant origin, mainly fatty fish such as salmon, Brazil nuts and chia / lin seeds. While it is relatively easy to obtain omega-3 fatty acids in its diet by incorporating these foods, the market is also full of supplements that are supposed to offer them.
The new scientific advice from the American Heart Association, which focuses on prescription medications for omega-3 fatty acids, warns patients who treat triglycerides themselves with OTC supplements because these products do not are not regulated by the FDA. Because of the lack of regulation, these supplements may not contain the ingredients that they claim to offer and may not be pure, among other potential problems.
According to the American Heart Association, there are two types of prescription medications: omega-3 fatty acids EPA + DHA combined and EPA alone. Both of these options were found to reduce triglycerides by 20 to 30% in patients with concentrations ranging from 200 to 499 mg / dL. The combo was not associated with an increase in "bad" LDL cholesterol, although this may be a risk factor in patients with extremely high triglyceride levels (greater than 500 mg / dL).
