One of the most famous meteor shower peaks this week

WSIL – The Leonid meteor shower is one of the best-known meteor showers of the year and peaks over the next two nights.

Although Leonids are in their prime, the shower is active and visible all month.

The Leonids are known to produce some of the most amazing displays. The most notable were in 1799, 1833 and 1966, when meteor rates per hour were in the thousands.

While 2020 isn’t supposed to be a peak year for the meteor shower, it still expected to produce 10-15 shooting stars per hour.

For the best chance of spotting the Leonids, head to an area away from city lights with no light pollution. Plus, lie down where you have a clear view of the whole sky.

The forecast for Tuesday night viewing is perfect! Just be sure to bundle up as temperatures drop quickly into the 30’s after sunset!

Another meteor shower is coming in less than a month: the December Geminids. The Geminids are considered the best meteor shower of the year, producing over 100 per hour. Peak is on the night of December 13.
