A woman sued a Kansas hospital, claiming that one of her employees had leaked confidential medical information to her alleged rapist – who then sexually assaulted her a second time.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in US District Court and obtained by NBC News, was aimed Atchison Hospital in northeastern Kansas, and his former technician X-ray, Janet Rawson Enzbrenner.

The complainant, who was named in the lawsuit but will not be identified by NBC News, was sexually assaulted on May 26, 2017. She was taken to Atchison Hospital where a rape kit was administered, according to the civil complaint.

The woman said she revealed the name of her alleged attacker to the hospital staff.

Later, Enzbrenner "had access to the applicant's individually identifiable medical information" and "contacted the plaintiff's assailant and informed him that he had accused him of sexual assault" , according to the plaintiff plaintiff 's plaintiff, Trevor Wohlford.

The accused rapist then "harassed the complainant relentlessly through SMS, social media and phone calls" before sexually assaulting her again on or about November 4, 2017, the woman said. .

His complaint includes a letter dated November 2, 2017, allegedly from the second alleged attack, the hospital's general manager, John Jacobson, which appears to confirm the allegations against Atchison.

Jacobson wrote that "this employee … had access to some of your medical information and apparently revealed it to another person without your permission".

"We sincerely and deeply regret that this has happened," wrote Jacobson, adding that the employee had been fired.

A representative of Atchison County Attorney said Friday that prosecutors were aware of the rape allegations, but had not lodged a complaint. The office refused to explain why he had chosen not to prosecute after the authorities had been informed.

It was unclear how Enzbrenner could have known the alleged rapist and the plaintiff's attorney, Wohlford, also declined to comment on Friday.

Messages sent to Enzbrenner on Friday, left via publicly-listed phone numbers and an email address, were not immediately returned.

Representatives from Atchison Hospital were also not immediately contacted for comment. Neither Enzbrenner nor the hospital formally responded to the complaint.
