OnePlus, as you probably know, is undergoing some changes right now. They are now a sub-brand of OPPO and their software teams are basically the same, where they will share the codebase and (hopefully) pump out updates and more stable releases more often. They’ll also release some sort of new unified operating system that will debut next year, but until then we’ve got OxygenOS 12 to look forward to on the current crop of OnePlus phones.
To kick off the arrival of this new OxygenOS 12, OnePlus presented its changes and talked about the “refreshing” user interface that will first appear on the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. This new Oxygen OS 12 is now available in Open Beta 1 for these two phones.
A forum post described OxygenOS 12 as providing a “more complete experience that streamlines users’ daily work and improves digital well-being.” He explained how this will give you a “first-hand” insight into how OxygenOS has reached another level, thanks to its building from OPPO’s ColorOS codebase, and that “the fully updated experience level ”will be more stable and have improved energy saving capabilities.
The post shared several screenshots of the UI, with changes to Zen Mode, OnePlus Shelf, Notes app, and the 3 levels of Dark Mode they’ve built in, depending on the community feedback.
Here is a complete list of the changes coming to this OnePlus 9 OxygenOS 12 Open Beta 1:

- Optimized desktop icons with improved textures, using a design inspired by all new materials and uniting lights and layers
- Dark mode
- Dark mode now supports three adjustable levels, providing a more personalized and comfortable user experience
- Shelf
- New additional styling options for maps, making data content more visual and easier to read
- Newly added headphone control card with one-click bluetooth headphone adjustment
- Recently added access to OnePlus Scout in Shelf, allowing you to search for multiple content on your phone, including apps, settings, media data, and more.
- Newly added OnePlus watch card in the shelf, for easy viewing of your health stats
- Work-life balance
- Work Life Balance is now available to all users, allowing you to effortlessly switch between Work and Life mode via quick settings
- WLB 2.0 now supports automatic switching of Work / Life mode, based on specific locations, Wi-Fi network and time, also bringing personalized app notification profiles based on personalization
- Gallery
- The gallery now allows you to switch between different layouts with a two finger pinch gesture, intelligently recognizing the best quality images and cropping the thumbnail according to the content, making the gallery layout more agreable
- AOD canvas
- Canvas AOD brings you new styles of lines and colors, for a more personalized lock screen experience with inspiring visuals
- New brushes and strokes added and support for color adjustment
- Optimized software algorithm and improved facial recognition to better identify the characteristics and skin color of different figures
Again, while this is a big deal, OxygenOS 12 (from Android 12) based on the ColorOS codebase, it’s not the big unified operating system that we’d expect to see on the market. next year. For now, it’ll likely be more of the same as what we got last year, only with some refinement and a user interface that looks less and less like the OnePlus of yore.
