Only one automaker failed to win 2021 IIHS Best Safety Pick awards

Each year, the Insurance Institute for Road Safety (IIHS) announces which vehicles earn either its Best security choice, or Best security choice + price. The good news is that the total number of awards is up for 2021, with 90 vehicles recognized compared to 64 last year. The bad news is that only one pickup is on the list, but it’s still better than Mitsubishi who didn’t make the cut with all of his models.

To be fair, Mitsubishi only sells four models in the United States. The Mirage subcompact is a champion in fuel efficiency, with the Outlander SUV serving as the engine of the brand. The Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross round out Mitsubishi’s lineup, but the IIHS has offered no indication as to whether those vehicles are close to winning an award. If there is good news here, it’s that Mitsubishi recently released an all-new Outlander which borrows heavily from the Nissan Rogue. The Rogue received a Best security choice + pricing for 2021, so maybe that will trickle down to the Outlander next year.

Pickup trucks dominate new vehicle sales in the US market, but only the Ram 1500 Crew Cab won an award. He received a Best security choice, but it is the only vehicle of the all Stellantis’ brand portfolio is even qualified. Likewise, only two vehicles from the General Motors umbrella were awarded. The Cadillac XT6 received a Best security choice + and the Chevrolet Equinox received a Best security choice. Hyundai Motor Group led the way with 17 awards in total, while Volvo came first in the highest honor with nine Best security choice + price.

The IIHS awards are based on vehicle performance in many categories. Occupant protection in a crash is part of the assessment process, with available safety technology and headlight efficiency also being considered.
