For weeks the nation was obsessed with Gabby Petito. Law enforcement and information services have been inundated with advice, clues and observations from many individual sources, all benevolent citizens trying to do whatever it takes to help a missing woman whose body was eventually found in Wyoming.
Among the informants were Democrats, Republicans, vaccinated people and unvaccinated people. This situation is unfortunate and tragic, but Petito is just one person.
By comparison, the COVID-19 virus has already infected more than 44 million Americans and killed more than 700,000. Faced with this national health crisis which infects and kills without distinction of sex, age, race, religious affinity or political affiliation, we must put aside our pride and our prejudices, reduce our hatred and our ignorance, adjust our behavior and reset our priorities to save ourselves, our families, loved ones and our community.
Sadly, many still view these deaths as a statistical figure. They are not just a number. Each of these lost souls was someone’s grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, husband, wife or child.
Americans are a caring, generous and sympathetic people. It is reassuring to see our nation focused, united and galvanized in our efforts to resolve the Petito affair. However, we must orient our priorities to focus, unify and galvanize our efforts to combat this deadly contagion of COVID-19.
