UPDATE 9:20 p.m. In a press release Thursday night, MDH says 374 doses of vaccine were distributed at the Rochester site at 8 p.m. Thursday.
2,399 Minnesota residents received doses statewide.
ROCHESTER, Minnesota (KTTC) – The Minnesota Department of Health’s pilot vaccination sites for adults over 65 and educators were launched Thursday. One of nine locations across the state is in Rochester at Willow Creek Middle School.
Of the 60,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine allocated to the state each week, 12,000 doses are now diverted to the pilot program.
“Last week was my birthday! So that was my birthday present,” said Michael Leming, vaccinated.
“Lucky. Mostly lucky,” said fellow recipient Debbie Flobin after leaving Willow Creek.
After a registration website crash on Tuesday – and only some 6,000 selected Minnesotans able to make appointments – lucky, might be the perfect description.
“My stepdaughter got it for me,” said Betty Wilson. “She got it for me. No problem at all.”
“It’s really easy,” Michael said. “We just got online.”
The exuberance was felt outside the school and in the cold January wind.
“I feel good. I feel like I did before going in. I’m ready for lunch. I’m always ready for lunch,” Michael joked.
“We were so lucky. We were sure to get one for him first,” Ann Leming said, gesturing to her husband. “It was so easy. Everyone was very organized in there. They had lines you went through. I sat down. I got the picture and it finished. I said ‘you’re done. ?
Michael added that it didn’t hurt at all.
“Everyone was really excited. It was perfect,” said Flobin. “
“Simply wonderful. Really good. No aches or nothing,” Wilson said.
Getting the Golden Ticket was not so easy for everyone.
“I had four people working there. My two daughters, my husband and myself. My daughter was able to get online in about 10 minutes. So we are, you know, really lucky. So, I’m good to go!
But it was worth it – to see that glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, firsthand.
“Right now it’s the most important thing in my life,” said Flobin. “My other life, I can’t have it until I get the vaccine. It’s pretty important.”
Minnesotans eligible to get vaccinated under the pilot program can register online or call 833-431-2053. Appointments can be made for next week from Tuesday.
