Orange County, Florida mayor urges businesses to demand indoor masks again

Jerry Demings, mayor of Orange County, Fla., Is calling on companies to re-demand masks indoors and in crowded spaces, regardless of vaccine status.

The Orange County Health Department recently reported an increase in COVID-19 cases. Over the past three weeks, Orange County’s 14-day rolling positivity rate has fallen from 4.28% to 11.2%, the highest rate since January. Yesterday, the positivity rate was over 16%. The mask guidelines were initially revoked when the positivity rate was below 5%.

Immunization rates have also slowed. Currently, 61.2% of eligible residents of Orange County have been vaccinated. Florida accounts for about 20% of COVID-19 cases in the United States, although the state only represents 6.5% of the nation’s population.

Currently, Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort are asking guests who have not been vaccinated to continue to wear masks, but are not checking vaccination status. Masks are optional for vaccinated guests.

Orange County can no longer impose COVID-19 restrictions due to legislation by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
