SALEM, Oregon – The Oregon House has approved the removal of the possibility for a family to evade mandatory childhood vaccinations.
Legislators voted 35 to 25 Monday to prevent parents from demanding personal, philosophical or religious exemptions in order to avoid compulsory vaccinations at school. This issue is one of the most controversial in this legislative session and has attracted hundreds of parents in protest.
Opponents say that the state should not interfere in individual medical decisions and that vaccine safety still needs to be debated.

This year has been the worst for measles in the United States for more than two decades. At least 77 people were diagnosed with measles as part of an outbreak in Washington and Oregon, which public health officials said ended last week.
When it is passed, Oregon will join California, Mississippi and West Virginia by allowing only medical exemptions. Washington State has also voted this year to limit exemptions for measles immunization.
