Weekly COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations increase, deaths decrease

The Oregon Health Authority’s COVID-19 Weekly Report, released Wednesday, shows an increase in daily cases and hospitalizations and a decrease in COVID-19-related deaths.

The OHA reported 1,318 new daily cases of COVID-19 during the week of Monday July 5 through Sunday July 11. This represents an increase of 11% from the previous week.

New hospitalizations related to COVID-19 rose to 104, down from 66 the previous week.

There have been 15 reported COVID-19-related deaths, up from 19 reported the previous week.

There were 54,702 tests for COVID-19 for the week of July 4-10. The percentage of positive tests was 3.4%, compared to 2.9% the previous week.

People aged 70 and over accounted for 38% of COVID-19-related hospitalizations and 74% of COVID-19-related deaths.

Friday’s COVID-19 Outbreak Weekly Report shows 21 active COVID-19 outbreaks in elderly communities and collective living spaces, with at least three confirmed cases and one or more COVID-19-related deaths.

Vaccinations in Oregon

The OHA reported on Wednesday that 6,086 new doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been added to the national immunization registry. Of this total, 3,219 doses were administered on Tuesday and 2,867 were administered the previous days but were entered in the vaccine registry on Tuesday.

The seven-day moving average is now 4,925 doses per day.

Oregon has now administered 2,587,462 first and second doses of Pfizer, 1,760,201 first and second doses of Moderna, and 174,296 single doses of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines.

As of Wednesday, 2,435,438 people had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 2,238,480 people had completed a series of COVID-19 vaccines.

It may take several days for the cumulative daily totals to be finalized because providers have 72 hours to report doses administered and technical issues have caused many providers to be late in reporting. The OHA provided technical support to vaccination sites to improve the timeliness of data entry into the state’s ALERT Immunization Information System (IIS).

To date, 2,973,645 doses of Pfizer, 2,260,540 doses of Moderna and 299,100 doses of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine have been delivered to sites across Oregon.

These data are preliminary and subject to change.

Updated immunization data is provided on Oregon’s COVID-19 Data Dashboards and was updated on Wednesday.

COVID-19 hospitalizations

The number of hospital patients with COVID-19 in Oregon is 122, 11 more than Tuesday. There are 34 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) beds, four more than Tuesday.

The total number of patients in hospital beds may fluctuate between reporting times. Figures do not reflect admissions per day or length of hospital stay. Staff limitations are not captured in this data and may further limit bed capacity.

More information on hospital capacity can be found here.

On Wednesday morning, St. Charles Bend reported nine patients with COVID-19, one of whom was in intensive care and on a ventilator.
