Oregon Reports Record 59 COVID-19 Deaths

The Oregon Health Authority reported more deaths from COVID-19 – 59 – on Thursday than it had reported in the days prior to the pandemic.

Authorities have yet to release the death dates of the 59 people. But it is extremely unlikely that they all died on the same day, given the common delays in data collection and reporting. In fact, Thursday’s tally could include deaths that occurred weeks ago that had not been reported.

The previous record for most reported COVID-19 deaths in one day was 54 on January 12 and again on September 7.

Meanwhile, the health authority reported Thursday that the number of new known daily cases continued to decline, to 1,453 cases, one of the lowest numbers reported on weekdays in the past two months.

Outstanding cases: The health authority’s weekly report on revolutionary cases revealed that about 76% of infections identified between September 26 and October 2 were in unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people. Some 24% of known infections were in people who had received one dose of Johnson & Johnson or two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines at least 14 days before they tested positive.

This equates to 2,542 infections per week in a fully vaccinated population of about 2.5 million Oregonians, compared to 7,869 weekly infections among the roughly 1.7 million unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people.

So far in the pandemic, 4.5% of all people who have experienced a breakthrough case in Oregon have been hospitalized and 0.8% have died, according to the health authority. Read the full report here.

Hospitalizations: Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 fell to 699, down 31 from the previous day. Patients in intensive care units fell by 14, to 173 on Thursday.

Vaccines: Oregon reported 3,405 people had been vaccinated for the first time since Wednesday.
