Oregon surpasses 100,000 cases since pandemic began

PORTLAND, Oregon – Oregon has now recorded more than 100,000 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began in late February.

The Oregon Health Authority reported 1,390 new confirmed and suspected cases on Friday, bringing the total to 100,308.

“While this significant number reflects the extent of the spread of the novel coronavirus within our communities, I would like to thank all Oregon who have been affected by this pandemic and thank the vast majority of Oregonians who have taken action to protect their families, neighbors, and the most vulnerable members of our communities, ”OHA Director of Public Health Rachael Banks said.

She added that the vaccine currently being distributed in our state offers hope of ending the pandemic, but “it is too early to let our guard down.”

Neighboring Idaho and Nevada, both with fewer residents overall, have seen more total COVID-19 cases with 125,000 and 194,000 respectively, Banks said. Oregon also has the 44th lowest average daily case among all states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New cases today in Oregon include: Baker (7), Benton (34), Clackamas (117), Clatsop 6), Columbia (6), Coos (18), Crook (10), Curry ( 10), Deschutes (59), Douglas (14), Grant (3), Harney (2), Hood River (29), Jackson (76), Jefferson (27), Josephine (30), Klamath (62), Lake (1), Lane (93)), Lincoln (7), Linn (43), Malheur (17), Marion (153), Morrow (4), Multnomah (200), Polk (18), Tillamook (15), Umatilla (59), Union (1), Wasco (30), Washington (221), Yamhill (18).

Health officials remind residents to keep a distance of six feet, wear a mask outside the home, wash their hands, avoid gatherings with non-members of the household, consult a medical provider in case of symptoms and follow public health advice.

Current models show an increase in COVID-19 cases but more Oregonians are staying at home. Three in four regularly wear masks.

With 21 new deaths, the toll rose to 1,304:

• Oregon’s 1284th COVID-19 death is a 94-year-old man in Clackamas County who tested positive Dec. 2 and died Dec. 15 at Legacy Mt. Hood Medical Center. He had underlying conditions.
• The 1,285th death from COVID-19 in Oregon is an 80-year-old woman in Clackamas County who tested positive on December 12 and died on December 16 at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center. The presence of underlying conditions is being confirmed.
• The 1286th death from COVID-19 in Oregon is a 62-year-old man in Deschutes County, who died on November 2 at his residence. The presence of underlying conditions is being confirmed.
• The 1287th COVID-19 death in Oregon is a 76-year-old Jackson County man who tested positive on November 19 and died on December 16 at Asante Ashland Community Hospital. He had underlying conditions.
• The 1,288th death from COVID-19 in Oregon is a 90-year-old woman in Josephine County who tested positive on December 3 and died on December 15 at her home. She had underlying conditions.
• The 1289th death from COVID-19 in Oregon is a 92-year-old woman in Josephine County who tested positive on December 3 and died on December 16 at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center. The presence of underlying conditions is being confirmed.
• Oregon’s 1290th COVID-19 death is an 84-year-old man in Josephine County who tested positive on December 3 and died on December 16.
• The 1291st COVID-19 death in Oregon is a 78-year-old man in Lake County who tested positive on December 1 and died on December 16 in Lake District hospital. He had underlying conditions.
• The 1292nd COVID-19 death in Oregon is a 95-year-old man in Lake County who tested positive on December 8 and died on December 17 at his residence. He had underlying conditions.
