Oregon wins 35-3 win over Montana

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Justin Herbert collected 316 yards and five touchdowns in Oregon's 35-3 win on Saturday night against Montana, the latest Ducks focus before opening Pac's play -12 at Stanford next week.

Jacob Breeland and Johnny Johnson III each scored two touchdowns for the Ducks (2-1), who won their 25th consecutive conference-free game at Stade Autzen.

Herbert scored for a touchdown in 31 consecutive games, the longest sequence in the country's history. It was his fifth career game with five touchdowns, most by a quarterback of Oregon. Marcus Mariota had four.

Fifth-year senior Dalton Sneed had 184 yards for Montana (2-1) at FCS, who avoided his first shutout since 1988 with a 25-yard throw by Brandon Purdy at the end of the third quarter .

"We have to improve, we lost," said Montana coach Bobby Hauck, questioning what his team could get out of the game. "We came here to win and we did not do it."

Oregon had just won the Nevada 77-6 defeat, putting the team back on the track after a disappointing loss to Auburn in the opening game of the season. Herbert also launched five touchdowns against the Wolf Pack and now has 11 touchdowns for the season.

Montana opened the season with victories over South Dakota and northern Alabama, making it into the top 25 of STATS FCS in 20th place. The Ducks are the second highest ranked Grizzlies in the modern era after their 63-7 loss to No. 7 Washington two years ago.

Montana senior catcher Jerry Louie-McGee caught six passes for 66 yards. He started the game in 1998, beating career record of 192 with Raul Pacheco. He returned a punt for a 74-yard touchdown against North Alabama last week to earn the title of player of the week in Big Sky.

Herbert made his first 10 assists for 113 yards and two goals, both at Breeland.

Oregon scored on their first attempt when Herbert contacted Breeland with a 5-yard touchdown pass. Ducks linebacker Mase Funa ended Montana's first attempt by firing Sneed. Funa, a real freshman, entered the match with four tackles for the loss to the Pac-12.

Breeland caught a 17-yard pass before the end of the first quarter to make it 14-0.

Time passing in the half, Herbert's pass on a fourth and one attempt was incomplete, giving the Grizzlies the ball to themselves to 45. But the practice ended when Brandon Purdy failed to score on 50 yards.

With 10 seconds remaining, Herbert dropped a defender for an 18-yard pass to Johnny Johnson III in the endzone, sending the Ducks into the break with a 21-0 lead.

"That shows how powerful he is at 240 pounds – I thought he was curled up, the whole stadium thought he was curled up," said the Oregon coach, Mario Cristobal, about Herbert's escape. "He has found a way to get out and show how strong he is."

Herbert found Johnson with a 1-yard pass in the third quarter, before a 10-yard pass at the start of the fourth quarter against Jaylon Redd.

Travis Dyle led the Oregon riders with 17 runs for 101 yards.

Oregon had not been transferred by his graduate Juwan Johnson for the third consecutive game because of a leg injury. Johnson was to be one of Herbert's main targets this season.
