The Jets lost a heartbreaking game 30-27 to the Patriots on “Monday Night Football”. Here are some thoughts and observations of the game:
1. It was a punch.
I know a big chunk of the fan base felt it was the best result, a near loss. These fans have already moved on to 2021 and the dream of drafting Clemson star Trevor Lawrence. But the reality for players and coaches currently on the Jets is that they are 0-9 and have seven games to go in the season. It must seem like an eternity to them.
I’m waiting to see the signs the Jets have wrapped him up and abandoned him. Obviously, they didn’t compared to the way they played against the Patriots. The Jets are playing hard. They are just not good enough. But I wonder how long they can maintain this. At some point, the losers will crush their competitive spirit. It’s hard to take the field every week feeling like you have to play a perfect game to stand a chance.
We had wondered if the Jets could make a change of coach during the week off. It felt like a natural moment to replace Adam Gase if that was the direction Christopher Johnson wanted to take. But after Monday night, it doesn’t make sense to get rid of Gase. The team is still playing hard for him. The decision to let Dowell Loggains call play paid off and showed Gase’s willingness to put his ego aside in an attempt to turn things around. If this season is really all about evaluating Sam Darnold upon his return from his shoulder injury, it’s probably best to keep things steady for this process as well.
Gase will not be the coach of this team in 2021. It is a virtual certainty. But there is nothing wrong with keeping it right now. If the Jets are showing signs that they’ve sidelined him and aren’t playing hard anymore, then maybe it’s time for Johnson to move on and go see an interim coach for the rest of the season. season.
Right now, Gase must figure out how to rebuild his team’s spirit after a crushing loss.
2. The Jets had 10 active rookies for Monday’s game.
This is what you want to see now if you are a fan of the Jets. How many of these recruits are forward goalkeepers? Let’s look at some of them.
The bad news for the rookies in the game was first-round pick Mekhi Becton’s chest injury. It’s unclear how severe the injury is, but if it’s a torn pectoral, it would cost him the season. The Jets were running behind Becton early on. The tackle has been the highlight of the Jets’ season. It looks like a piece of the foundation here. Now he just needs to stay healthy.
Denzel Mims is showing signs that he is a player. He had four catches for 62 yards on eight targets. Keep in mind this is only his third game and he hasn’t even had a full month of practice. It’s basically at the end of training camp. The Jets must continue to target him. The only blow to Mims on Monday is that he appeared to have slowed down Joe Flacco’s interception in the fourth quarter.
Ashtyn Davis played her best game. The Jets had safety playing near the line of scrimmage and it was disruptive. He pierced Cam Newton but was called on a penalty. I didn’t think it was a penalty. Davis has shown his versatility, playing both in the box and down at times. He struggled in Kansas City, but so do many defensive backs.
La’Mical Perine made six carries for 19 yards and two catches for 19 yards. The way the game played spoiled Perine’s use. The Jets like to use Frank Gore much earlier, then go more to Perine in the second half. But the Jets barely got the ball in the second half, so Perine didn’t get as many touches.
Cornerback Bryce Hall made his debut and played about 50 percent of the shots, spelling out Pierre Desir for the series. There was nothing noticeable about Hall’s live debut, which can be a good thing.
Defensive end Jabari Zuniga played 19 shots in defense. I would expect his playing time to increase as the season progresses.
3. The receivers were all healthy.
Gase was waiting for the wide starting receivers on the field that he expected to have this offseason. It finally happened on Monday night and they made a difference. Breshad Perriman (five catches, 101 yards, two touchdowns) was the deep threat the Jets were missing. Mims showed development. Crowder, who is treating a groin injury, had a wonderful touchdown hold in the second quarter.
The problem is, everything seems too little, too late. You would have liked to see if they could have made a difference in this attack if they had played all season. Instead, Darnold threw in plenty of saves for most of the season.
4. The dreaded 0-16 professions.
The 0-9 start is the worst in franchise history and it’s hard to look at the remaining schedule and find a win for the Jets. After the break this week, the schedule looks like this: at Chargers (2-6), vs Dolphins (5-3), vs Raiders (5-3), at Seahawks (6-2), at Rams (5-3) ), against Browns (5-3) and Patriots (3-5).
The Chargers have the worst record, but they have lost close games and are better than their record suggests. Could the Jets catch the overconfident Dolphins, Raiders or Browns? It’s their best hope for victory, for me.
It will be fascinating if they are 0-15 on their way to Foxborough in Week 17.
Reveal the statistic
Here is the number of games played by the Jets per quarter: First quarter – 19; second trimester – 12; third trimester – 11; fourth quarter – four. It’s not a good thing to be able to easily remember every game a team played in the fourth quarter. The Flacco interception and the three-and-out over the two-minute drive were all the Jets’ offense in the fourth quarter. It’s a good way to lose.
Surprising number of shots
Rookie CB Bryce Hall played 39 shots (48%) in his debut. I didn’t expect him to play so much in his first game. It looked like the Jets were working on him for Pierre Desir, who struggled in the game.
Game ball
This is a difficult question. Flacco would be the choice if not for the costly interception. I’ll go with Perriman. He looked like a # 1 wide receiver last night. He had five catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns, including a few key catches for the opening downs. The only negative was a touchdown lost in the first practice. But he caught up with him as the game progressed.
