SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Arike Ogunbowale had 24 points, the five starters scored a brace, and Notre Dame, fourth in the standings, led No. 17 Siracusa 98-68 in women's basketball on Monday night.
Brianna Turner had 22 points, while Jessica Shepard and Marina Mabrey had 17 each for the Irish (26-3, 13-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). This victory was the eighth for the Irish compared to a ranked opponent this season.
Tiana Mangakahia led Orange (20-7, 9-5) with 17 points – all in the second half. Miranda Drummond had 14, and Digna Strautmane and Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi have 10 10. The Orange are now 3-6 this season against nationally ranked teams, including three defeats at home.
Our Lady dominated on both sides of the court. The Irish dominated Syracuse 60-40 in the match, scored 16 fast baskets, forced 16 turnovers and rebounded 46-34 on Syracuse.
Notre Dame shot 58% of the field and kept the orange shot at 38%, including 6 out of 20 against 3.
After Syracuse came closer to less than three in the second quarter, Notre Dame outshot Orange 38-11 to take its biggest lead, 64-34 with 4:32 left in the third quarter. The Orange answered 10-0, but it was the closest match to Syracuse.
Emily Engstler racked up 26-23 at 8:23 in the second quarter, but the Irish scored 16-0 in the ensuing six minutes to take control of the match. Our Lady did damage to the inside, scoring 14 points inside the painting. Turner scored six and Shepard added four in the blitz. In the half, the Irish scored 32 points in the interior.
Syracuse, which drew an average of 2,110 spectators per game at home, drew 7,568 spectators on a bitter night in central New York. The Orange hoped to break the barrier of 11,021 visits, but the conditions of the blizzard prevented many people from leaving. The match comes two days after the Orange men drew a crowd of 35,642 against Duke, a national record for a university match played on a campus.
Dominant Irish
Notre Dame leads the series with Syracuse 33-2 and is 15-1 to Syracuse. Orange coach Quentin Hillsman has never beaten the Irish. He is 0-14 against them.
Big picture
Notre Dame has eight victories on ranked teams and its strong schedule should allow the defending national champions to be ranked first in the NCAA tournament standings.
Syracuse is still looking to be in the NCAA top 16, allowing him to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament.
