Al fresco dining may resume in San Francisco from Thursday, now that the number of COVID cases is declining, the state has lifted regional stay-at-home orders that began more than a month ago.
Exact details of the new public health orders were given at an afternoon press conference, but the Mayor of London Breed anticipated the announcement with a tweet on Monday morning saying: ‘We’re going to go from there ‘forward with some limited reopenings, including alfresco dining and personal services. “
Considering the rainstorms to come this week and the fact that many businesses have gone into hibernation during the holidays, it is likely that restaurants will not throw tables on the sidewalk and in parklets immediately, but it could happen. soon!
Breed says she expects San Francisco to return to “Purple” level status, along with most other counties in the state, as daily case totals remain high here and elsewhere. But as hospital bed capacity increases and a predicted increase linked to New Year’s celebrations has not materialized, life in much of the state will soon return to normal.
“I’m excited that we can do this, and I know it will bring some relief to small businesses and workers who have been really struggling for months now,” Breed says. “But this pandemic is not over. We must continue to do what we know to help keep our cases under control.”
At the city’s afternoon press conference, Breed detailed the city’s updated orders, which include the ability to resume indoor and outdoor personal services, such as hair salons, salons hairdressers, massage parlors and nail salons, with the mandatory wearing of a mask at all times.
Restaurants can resume alfresco dining starting Thursday, January 28 (or after it stops raining), but tables should again be spaced six feet apart, seating a maximum of six people at each table from of a maximum of two separate households.
Indoor fitness in the studio shops can resume with one-on-one training, but it looks like the gyms aren’t reopening just yet until SF returns to the “Red” level.
Breed further encourages everyone to continue to wear masks in public, limiting all social gatherings outside and keeping all indoor gatherings short and well ventilated.
I’m glad we can do this, and I know it will take some relief out of small businesses and workers who have been really struggling for months.

San Francisco hotels and Airbnbs may resume accepting out-of-city guests, but the mandatory 10-day traveler quarantine remains in effect, meaning anyone booking a stay will need to be in the city for more than 10 days – and remain sequestered for the first 1o.
Grocery stores are allowed to increase their maximum capacity to 50% of normal, down from 35%.
Additionally, the city is leaving a 10 p.m. curfew in place for all non-essential activities – but as we said when the curfew went into effect in December, that doesn’t impact a ton of commercial activity since most restaurants stopped serving. 9 pm anyway.
Laurie Thomas, executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, tells the reviewer that the 10pm curfew will have a negative effect on restaurants in the future because they “won’t realistically be able to sit down afterwards. 8:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. “, in order to comply. This will limit the number of seats they can accommodate per night, but it still might not be drastically different from what we saw in the fall.
