The last official Overwatch short film dates back to 2019, and fans have been waiting for another ever since. Now, some skilled animators have stepped up and delivered a brilliant that has captivated the players.
After a few months of teasing, host PJ Rascals uploaded the full version of “Busan Blackout,” a fan-made cutscene that sees Sombra on the field of D.Va.
The short film begins in rainy downtown Busan, with the stealth hero DPS Translocation on top of a building.
After exploring the futuristic city beautifully rendered with flashing D.Va billboards and flying cars, Agent Talon leaps into the air and activates his ultimate, EMP.
With a flash, all of the bright city lights are hacked, turning some of the large screens into Sombra skull icons. The inflatable cow deflates, the cars turn off, and the Busan train comes to a stop.
Perhaps the best moment is when the bunny D.Va billboard transforms into a combination of the tank hero icon MEKA and Sombra, ultimately becoming just a skull as the entire city darkens.
Fans absolutely loved the video, with some popular Overwatch YouTubers even sounding.
“It was drugs,” commented KarQ, known for his “one piece of advice” educational series.
“Okay, that was amazing. Seriously amazing. Loved the transition from the bunny D.Va to the Sombra logo! SUPERB!” another noticed.
“For a while, I thought it was official, it’s crazy animation! Keep doing stuff like that, ”applauded another user.
While it’s unclear when Blizzard’s next official animated short will be, this video definitely gets us excited about what’s to come, especially with Overwatch 2 on the way.
