Overwork is now an official medical condition

Burnout is real and he now has his own distinction with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a legitimate medical syndrome.

The term "burnout" has long been used to express everything from fatigue related to a particular task to total overwork. The current definition is difficult to define, but the WHO defines burnout with these three guidelines:

  • Feelings of exhaustion or exhaustion of energy.
  • Increased mental distance from work, or feelings of negativity or cynicism related to one's work.
  • Reduced professional efficiency.

It is interesting to note that the current description of burnout requires that the three criteria above be met. You can not be really happy and not produce at work; it is not burnout.

The WHO also said that the three indicators of the feeling of burnout were exclusive to the workplace. The parent class of the "burnout" classification is not only "problems related to employment or unemployment", but adds: "Burnout refers specifically to the phenomena of the work context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life ".

The Matrix Wage Survey reveals that 35% of technology professionals say they feel "very exhausted," with one-third of the crowd saying that this impression stems from a lack of recognition. Almost the same percentage says that their workload is to blame. A quarter of respondents say the lack of work-life balance is the main source of dissatisfaction, and nearly a fifth of them say their boss is to blame. The criteria of WHO are easily fulfilled by these respondents.

Last year, Blind interviewed his audience to find out where the most exhausted technology professionals were working. Netflix has had the best results, which is not surprising as the company strives to provide a strong work-life balance for its employees. But companies such as Twitch, Oracle, Snap Inc., and Amazon were top of the list, with many employees reporting being fried.

There are tactics to reduce burnout, such as ensuring you get the recognition you deserve. Perhaps more critical than tripling your exhaustion is to recognize the early signs and take steps to prevent it. If you feel that your workload is becoming too difficult or if you need a vacation, talk about it. Your boss will probably not like what you have to say, but the company will not really like it if you are on paid sick leave because you have worked until you are exhausted.
