Owen Wilson made his very first appearance as a host on NBC Saturday Night Live in the season 47 premiere.
“A lot has changed since last season. The vaccine was released everywhere except Florida, and the rest of the country returned to normal for about a week and a half, ”the Texas-born actor said opening his monologue.
“I’m excited to be here to do something live,” Wilson said, noting that unlike movies, “reviews will come in immediately. People are probably tweeting reviews right now.
Although Wilson was told that if he could read the good reviews he should also read the bad ones, “that’s not true,” he joked, “I only read the good ones. I really find that the bad guys don’t really talk to me the same way.
He then recalled a bad guy who “passed my radar” years ago who said, “Owen Wilson’s on-screen character has all the ambition of an old golden retriever lying next to a fire.”
“To be honest, I’ve probably been guilty at times of coasting a bit, getting my foot off the pedal, but I’ll tell you what. When Daniel Day-Lewis retired and all that pressure landed on my shoulders, everything changed. That’s when I knew I had to do Cars 3,Wilson said to great applause.
He called hosting SNL part of “taking risks and spreading your wings as an artist”.
“And is it the worst thing in the world being a golden retriever lying next to a fire?” he added. “I mean, I know everyone comes in here and says, ‘This is going to be a great show!’ Is it? I do not know!”
