The Pacific Coast League, one of two leagues playing at the Triple-A level, has officially retired from the old structure of Minor League Baseball. The exit of the PCL comes on the eve of the deadline set Friday by Major League Baseball for 120 minor league teams to agree to move forward by remaining an official affiliate of the MLB.
The PCL is the first league to leave MiLB, or as it is technically called, the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. On the one hand, such a departure had become inevitable, as the overall structure of the MiLB, as well as the individual leagues within the miners, are in the process of being dissolved and reorganized – although some names are retained. (For example, the terms “Pacific Coast League” and “Minor League Baseball” should continue, but they will refer to entirely new setups.)
But the PCL’s decision made waves Thursday night among the minor leagues …
