Washington High School claimed a 58-40 victory over Greene Central on Friday night at Snow Hill.
The Pam Pack took their record to 5-2, 2-1 in Eastern Plains 2A behind West Craven, while the Rams fell to 1-3 in the league and 3-4 in aggregate.
Neither defense was able to stop in the first half as a 15-8 WHS lead in the first quarter turned into a 38-34 advantage at halftime. Greene Central failed to convert on three tries for two points after touchdowns in the first half, but ran 70 yards to start the second to take a 40-38 lead.
Senior Kentari Gibbs-Leathers turned the game in Washington’s favor with a 60-yard run, then broke one for 80 yards after the Pack’s Gary Payne found a sack to stop Greene Central on the downs. That turned the two-point deficit into a 51-40 advantage.
“It was a big game at the right time,” said coach Perry Owens. “We have a young defense who played when we needed them. “
After Hayes Pippin intercepted a pass to stop another Rams scoring threat, Gibbs-Leathers set the final score with a 12-yard touchdown run.
“We started Terry on receiver and Kentari stepped up,” said Owens. “He’s a great, hard-working boy and he carried the load for us tonight.”
WHS quarterback Pippin threw scoring passes to William Reid, Christian Norman and Terry Moore in the first half and also scored from a 15-yard run.
“Hayes has been great on both sides of the ball tonight,” said Owens. “He continues to grow and has given us some elite play lately.”
Moore added a 53-yard getaway in the first half.
After a three-game winning streak in eight days, Washington is back in action on Friday for a key conference game at North Pitt.
