Doctors say that a growing number of men in Papua New Guinea are being treated for penis enlargements that went wrong.

Doctors in Papua New Guinea said that a "national problem" of sloppy penis enlargements was increasing and was taking resources away from more urgent health problems.
According to doctors across the country, boys aged 16 and men over 55 reported disfigurement and penile dysfunction after injecting "foreign substances" into their penises. These "foreign substances" include baby oil, coconut oil and silicone.
Akule Danlop, a surgeon at Port Moresby General Hospital, said that over the last two years he had treated an average of five cases a week – and these were just the ones that had been reported.

Danlop said the effects are often irreversible and that most men regret what they did. He told the Guardian he saw "abnormal bumpy masses developing on the penis and sometimes the scrotum", while others arrived with ulcers that "eventually burst", making it difficult to urinate.

According to Danlop, the epidemic has pulled the resources of patients in need of serious treatment.
"There is cancer, there are other conditions … It's a bit frustrating to see these cases when other people deserve [help] and then these people hurt themselves, they do it to themselves, "he said.
