ALLENTOWN, PA – Students are back in class and local doctors are reporting COVID cases are on the rise.
“The number of children [with COVID cases] starts to go up slowly, ”said Dr Alex Benjamin of LVHN.
Benjamin’s news came as it was unclear when the children would be eligible for the vaccine.
Everything changed on Monday.
Pfizer announced that its vaccine trial for children aged 5 to 11 was safe and well tolerated.
Vicki Kistler, director of health for the city of Allentown, said it could only take a few weeks before her deployment.
“We have so many parents who are eagerly awaiting vaccines for their children,” Kistler said.
“We hope it will be in the next three weeks and we are definitely preparing the staff, the locations, the supplies to be ready,” Kistler said.
This is great news for parents like Angela Deloskey. She has two children in primary school.
“I think vaccinations are a good idea because kids may not worry about exposure to disease and everything in between with all the other kids,” Deloskey said.
But not all parents are on board.
“I’m not at all comfortable with it,” said Erinne Butler, who has two children in elementary school.
She says it’s too new for her to feel comfortable.
“Because our children are so young, we don’t know if it will last long, if it will affect their health when they are in their 20s, it is just not enough for me as a mother to be safe. “said Butler.
Nathan Hagstrom, president of pediatrics at Lehigh Valley Health Network, says the vaccine is safer than the Delta variant.
“So while it is not likely to affect most children with serious illness or complications, it can and does at a much higher frequency than any potential side effects of the vaccine,” said Hagstrom.
