A doctor at Park City Hospital said the overwhelming majority of their current COVID-19 patients are not vaccinated.
But Dr Wing Province reports a more troubling trend. He says many of these patients are hostile to hospital staff, are misinformed, and on occasion even accost health workers.
Dr Province, the hospital’s medical director, told Summit County Health Council on Monday evening that more than 90 percent of their COVID patients are unvaccinated.
He said the attitude of patients is an issue staff have been experiencing for about two months. He gave the example of a woman in the emergency room.
“She, being COVID positive, spat in our nurse’s face, kicked our nurse in the chest and scratched all the technicians and anyone who came to try to put an IV, tried to resuscitate her , calling them each name in the book. We had to close the door as there were children in the emergency department who shouldn’t hear the kind of words she used to describe our caregivers. And that was just one, that was then admitted to the ICU where we had three other patients like that, where the nurses and the technicians and the doctors who are here, literally trying to save their lives and keep alive, are treated like that. “
Dr Province said that not all cases are like this. But he said a significant portion of patients don’t believe they have COVID.
“… believe that it’s some kind of flu virus that has been released by different governments, that they don’t believe that there is a COVID-19 virus, and that we as caregivers trying to Help them, we’re part of a conspiracy, a government conspiracy to put microchips on them or to label them with some kind of disease, which somehow we gain financially by falsely labeling their condition. And because of that, they treat us that way.
In addition, the family or friends of these patients have the same attitude, which means that they do not want to wear masks in the hospital or respect the limits of visitors in hospital rooms.
The doctor said if patients believe they have COVID, they sometimes demand unorthodox treatment. He said there has been a lot of interest recently in ivermectin, a treatment for parasitic infections. However, Dr Province said 21 medical companies have indicated that ivermectin has no benefit for COVID and its manufacturer, Merck, said it should not be used to treat the virus.
He said the patients’ behavior contrasted sharply with that of a year ago.
“Last year, when the patients arrived, they were scared in their eyes. They looked to us for hope and help and we provided that to them. And this time, we are not treated as, in quotes, without quotes, heroes. Rather than hope, we see hatred in their eyes. But I have to thank our nurses, doctors and technicians. They’re really just turning the other cheek and doing whatever they can to keep these patients alive and well. “
Dr Province added that a year ago, the average age of death from COVID was just over 70. This year, the average is 50 years.
He said that of the 10 percent of their infected patients who are vaccinated, so called “breakthrough cases,” almost all are over 70, or they are “immunocompromised”. whether they have a health problem or are taking treatment that reduces the body’s ability to resist infections.
Still, Dr Province said breakthrough patients have a milder case of the virus.
He said the Intermountain healthcare system, which includes the Park City facility, is at 100 percent of its bed capacity, and it is expected to hit 150 percent this week. Meanwhile, he noted, more and more nurses are leaving the profession due to burnout.
Summit County Board of Health members like Doug Evans said they were troubled by the doctor’s report.
“It’s disheartening to know that it has come to this point. I always thought we were better than that. I am so grateful that you are the heroes, you are all the heroes.
And board member Dr Ilyssa Golding asked if there was anything they could do.
“I want you to feel safe at work too. It’s really important, especially if people are spitting and doing things like that. Do you feel like you have what you need? I know that people’s behavior is unpredictable. But it is really important to me and to all of us that you feel as secure as possible in your job.
Dr Province responded that they were assured of safety and that the Park City Police Department offered to help defuse situations when they do occur.
