Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb said on Thursday that Covid booster injections could become a reality for parts of the population. Gottlieb predicted following the announcement that a consulting group from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considering booster shots for immunocompromised patients.
“I think the bottom line is we’re going to increase some of the population,” Gottlieb told CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith”. “I think considering recalls, especially in the older and more vulnerable population, is something we’re going to have to do.”
Gottlieb noted that Israel is already offering booster shots for adults with serious pre-existing health conditions, and France and the UK are planning to give booster shots. The former FDA chief in the Trump administration also cited data from Israel showing that the durability of Covid vaccines does not last as long as researchers might have predicted from the start.
“I think we’re going to get there in terms of boosters, especially for the older population that was vaccinated in December and January,” Gottlieb said. “You may have a very long lasting response after you get the third dose.”
Host Shepard Smith also asked Gottlieb to re-impose mask warrants across the country due to the highly transmissible delta variant. Los Angeles County reissued a mask warrant on Thursday requiring residents to wear masks indoors, regardless of their immunization status.
Gottlieb told Smith he believed Los Angeles was the exception and advised individuals to take masking action themselves.
“I think vulnerable people in these hot spots across the country are going to have to take action and take precautions if they think they are in danger, as a lot of the spread is happening in states that have already claimed they are in danger. would not return to mandates, ”Gottlieb said.
