CASTAIC, Calif. (KABC) – Seven MPs, a guard assistant and two inmates were injured in a riot at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic Thursday afternoon, officials said.

About two dozen inmates were also sprayed with pepper as the facility was closed and MPs worked to contain the melee.

The incident began just after 3 p.m. when deputies were conducting security checks at the facility’s dormitories, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

An inmate allegedly attacked a deputy and then joined in with other inmates, the department said.

Additional MPs showed up in an attempt to stop the attack and contain the incident. About 20 to 25 inmates were beaten with pepper spray as MPs tried to control them.

Seven deputies and a guard assistant were injured. The assistant and six of these assistants were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life threatening.

Two detainees were also injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The prison remained closed for several hours after the riot.
