QUEEN – A passenger from a JetBlue aircraft stopped on Sunday night at the John F. Kennedy International Airport. He was assessed and allowed to respond to concerns that he was infected with measles, officials said.
The aircraft was moored in a JFK support zone after landing in New York from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. He is now descending.
"After information pointing to a potential medical concern on board, flight 410 from Santo Domingo to JFK was asked to make a reservation for medical services as a precaution so that a client could be examined, "said a spokeswoman for JetBlue. "All customers have been cleared and the flight will proceed normally."
The passenger, who had already been vaccinated, was assessed by the emergency medical services and authorized, said a spokesman for the Port Authority.
Measles is very contagious. Hundreds of cases have been reported in New York.
Symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. It can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain). Measles infection in a pregnant woman can lead to miscarriage, premature birth or a low birth weight baby. Measles is easily transmitted in the air when someone coughs or sneezes. People can also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person.
