YouTube, owned by Google, is facing the exodus of some of its major advertisers, following troubling claims that pedophiles have infiltrated the video commentary section featuring children, apparently inconsequential , until now. And YouTube's own technology may be perpetuating this worrying trend.
On Feb. 17, a YouTube user, Matt Watson, posted a video titled "Youtube Facilitates the Sexual Exploitation of Children, and is Being Monetized (2019)". The video itself, which has nearly 2.5 million views at the time of writing, is hard to watch and what Watson has discovered is even more frightening. Look at your own risk.
Watson discovered a multitude of YouTube videos featuring children engaged in harmless activities, such as doing gymnastics or dancing with friends, which were filled with nasty comments about alleged pedophiles. Users were interacting, objectifying minors sexually, and even exchanging links with child pornography.

Watson finally discovered that some of these videos were accompanied by ads from companies of all sizes, which meant that the videos where these disturbing exchanges took place had been "monetized".
"All content – including comments – putting minors at risk is obnoxious and we have clear policies banning it on YouTube. We acted immediately by removing accounts and channels, reporting illegal activity to the authorities, and disabling comments on tens of millions of videos containing minors. Much remains to be done and we continue to work to improve and catch the abuse faster. "
