URBANA – A man and woman from Champaign, apparently prompted by a social media post targeting someone they knew, have been charged with home invasion.
Urbana Police Lt. Dave Smysor said Elija Hawkins, 19, and Tyeria Bates, 32, both of whom gave the same address in the 400 block of Briar Lane, were arrested around 10 p.m. on Wednesday. 30 for allegedly breaking into a man’s house in Urbana. and hurt him.
Smysor said the hubbub started when the victim, a 24-year-old man who lives in the 1400 block of Silver Street, had a disagreement with the mother of his child and told her on social media that she should come. get his things back.
The woman, apparently upset by his threat to throw her things outside, told her sister, Bates, what he said and Bates and Hawkins went to the Silver Street apartment.
Smysor said the couple kicked the man’s apartment door and confronted him. Bates was armed with a straight-bladed knife, which she allegedly used to stab the resident in the arm and face.
Smysor said the resident suffered a “large cut to his left cheek” which required treatment at Carle Hospital.
Hawkins allegedly picked up the resident’s television and attempted to throw it across the room. The resident allegedly armed himself with a knife and cut Hawkins, who was also taken to hospital for treatment and arrested after his release.
The couple were charged Thursday with two counts of home invasion, a Class X felony carrying a mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years after conviction.
Judge Adam Dill set the bond at $ 150,000 for Bates and $ 100,000 for Hawkins, ordered them out of contact with the alleged victim and told them to return to court on October 19.
