SAO PAULO – (AP) – Pelé had an apparent tumor removed from the right side of his colon during an operation.
Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital said on Monday the 80-year-old footballer was in an intensive care unit and would be moved to a regular room on Tuesday.
The operation was a “big victory,” Pelé said on his social media Monday.
He went to the hospital for routine checkups last week when the tumor was discovered. The hospital said in a statement that the tumor had been identified during routine cardiovascular and laboratory examinations. He added that he was collecting samples to analyze for pathologies.
“I thank God for feeling so good and allowing Dr Fábio and Dr Miguel to take care of my health,” Pele said. “Last Saturday I had surgery to remove a suspicious lesion in my right colon. The tumor was identified during tests I mentioned last week.
“Fortunately, I am used to celebrating great victories by your side. I will face this match with a smile on my face, a lot of optimism and joie de vivre surrounded by the love of my family and friends. “
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known worldwide as Pelé, was hospitalized last Tuesday. He used his social media to deny he was in poor health.
“Guys, I haven’t passed out and I’m very healthy. I went there for my routine checkups, which I hadn’t been able to do before due to the pandemic. Let them know I won’t be playing next Sunday, ”he joked in the tweet.
Pelé, the only male player to win three World Cups, has had mobility issues since a failed hip replacement in 2012. He has been forced to use walkers and wheelchairs in public. He has also been admitted to hospitals in recent years for kidney and prostate procedures.
Pelé won the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups and remains Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 77.
