Pennsylvania college bans fraternities and sororities

Fraternities and sororities will no longer be allowed at Swarthmore College.

The president of the school, Valerie Smith, made the announcement on Friday.

This comes after the only two private liberal arts college fraternities in the Philadelphia suburbs have decided to dissolve despite the outrage aroused by the internal documents of one of the organizations. They contained derogatory comments about women and the LGBTQ community and jokes about sexual assault. Two campus publications published Phi Psi documents from 2012 to 2016 and revealed an anonymous leak.

As a result of the publication of the documents, dozens of students occupied Phi Psi's home on campus and called for the closure of the two fraternities.

Smith says that the only sorority of the school can continue with its current members until the spring semester 2022 but can not recruit or initiate new members.
