The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported an increase of 8,291 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday. In addition to the record number of new cases, there have also been 194 newly reported deaths in the state.
The number of cases in Pennsylvania now stands at 375,431 total cases since March. The state’s death toll rose to 10,757.

After a few days of tiny numbers due to slow reporting over the Thanksgiving holiday, Pennsylvania appears to be catching up, reporting a new record high of 8,291 cases. However, as the COVID Tracking Project warned, just like the new, lower cases, the following higher numbers likely include many new cases from the previous days that simply went unreported due to the extended weekend. holidays.
That said, the 8,291 cases still came out of 24,470 new tests, below the average for the week leading up to Thanksgiving. This corresponds to a daily positivity rate of 33.9%, bringing the seven-day average to 30.3%
The new cases also increase the seven-day moving average of cases, which has rebounded to 6,800 cases per day.

Pennsylvania also saw a sharp increase in deaths, similar to Tuesday. As of Wednesday, 194 new deaths were reported in the state, bringing the state’s seven-day average down to 95 deaths per day. After just 170 total deaths between Friday and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday combined for a total of 374 – at least some of which are from previous days that went unreported due to the holidays.

Hospitalizations also continue to increase. Currently sitting at 4,982 COVID-19 patients in healthcare facilities across the state, Pennsylvania could go through 5,000 current hospitalizations on Thursday, if not by the end of the week. The number of those patients on ventilators is also increasing, with 565 patients – more than 100 more than this time last week – currently intubated. The state record is 685 total ventilators in service, and Pennsylvania is sliding in that direction.

Coronavirus in the Lehigh Valley
Lehigh Valley tied its own record set on Saturday for new cases – 534. Lehigh County has reported 289 of those cases, while Northampton County set a new record with the remaining 245. March.
There have also been three new deaths in Lehigh Valley – two in County Lehigh and one in County Northampton. The death toll in the region is now 724.

- Berks County has 14,347 total cases and 463 deaths, with 282 new cases and two new deaths reported on the last day.
- Bucks County has 18,296 total cases and 704 deaths, with 360 new cases and 11 new deaths reported on the last day.
- Carbon County has 1,421 total cases and 57 deaths, with 55 new cases and three new deaths reported on the last day.
- Monroe County has 3,557 total cases and 153 deaths, with 108 new cases and five new deaths reported on the last day.
- Montgomery County has 22,618 total cases and 947 deaths, with 390 new cases and six new deaths reported on the last day.
- Schuylkill County has 4,253 total cases and 181 deaths, with 85 new cases and five new deaths reported on the last day.
