The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that it would withdraw funds from 127 Defense Department projects, including schools and daycares for military families, while it was diverting $ 3.6 billion to fund the wall of President Donald Trump along the US border with Mexico.
Schools for children of members of the US Army from Kentucky to Germany in Japan will be affected. A crèche located in the Andrews Common Base in Maryland – the home of Air Force One – will also see its diverted funds, the Pentagon announced.
Trump declared a national emergency earlier this year to access funds from the military construction budget. In March, the Pentagon sent Congress an exhaustive list of projects likely to be affected.
A Pentagon official said at an information meeting that the ministry had received a "legitimate order" from Trump to divert funds. She said the Pentagon was working closely with Congress and its allies abroad to find funds to replace the funds used for the wall, but that there was no guarantee that these funds would come.
Tuesday, the Pentagon said the first $ 1.8 billion would come from projects outside the United States, followed by projects in the interior of the country.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the reallocation of funds by the Trump administration was a "slap" for US military members. The list of projects concerned also includes roads, maintenance workshops, equipment storage buildings and hazardous materials warehouses.
The wall was a central promise of Trump's 2016 campaign and remains at the center of his immigration policy as he aims for his reelection in 2020.
Some $ 30 million allocated to an equipment building in Fort Huachuca, southern Arizona, will be used to pay for the wall.
US Republican Senator Martha McSally of Arizona said that she had fought that no project in her state would be affected and that the former secretary of defense by interim Patrick Shanahan had the guarantee. She said in a statement that the Fort Huachuca project had already been delayed.
