People share their vaccination cards on social media. Here’s why you probably shouldn’t

The Better Business Bureau says it might want to think twice.

Look, this is completely understandable. Getting the COVID-19 vaccine is a huge deal, and you – let’s say it’s you – probably want to share the news (“So I did one thing”, etc.) with your family, friends and family. followers.

But posing for a selfie with that vaccination card could put you at risk for identity theft.

The card has your full name on it after all. It also contains your birthday and information about where you received your vaccine. Match that with the information already available about you on your social media profiles and via your digital signature (hint: that’s a lot) and someone might just be on the right track to making your online identity their own.

But that’s not all. Publishing your vaccination card could also make it easier for fraudsters to create fake versions of these cards.

According to BBB, crooks in Britain have been caught selling fake vaccination cards on eBay and TikTok.

BBB offers the following tips for sharing safely on social media:

Share your vaccine sticker or use a contoured frame instead. If you want to post about your vaccine, there are safer ways to do it. You can share a photo of your vaccine sticker or set a frame around your profile picture.
Check your security settings.Check your security settings on all social media platforms to see what you are sharing and with whom. If you want your friends and family to only see your messages, make sure that is how your privacy settings are configured.
Beware of responses to popular social media prompts. Sharing your vaccine photo is just the latest social trend. Think twice before participating in other personal viral posts, such as listing all the cars you have owned (including makes / model years), favorite songs, and top 10 TV shows. Some of those “favorite things” are commonly used passwords or security questions.
