Moderna says people who received her Covid vaccine last year are almost TWICE more likely to get a breakthrough infection compared to those who received the vaccine recently

- Comparatively, there are 162 breakthrough cases among those vaccinated between July 2020 and December 2020 in clinical trials.

- Early data showed that a third dose increased levels of neutralizing antibodies up to 15-fold after one month
Moderna Inc claims that people who received their COVID-19 vaccine last year are almost twice as likely to contract a breakthrough infection than those recently vaccinated.
Groundbreaking cases occur when people contract the disease 14 days or more after receiving their last dose of the vaccine.
New data released Wednesday revealed 88 groundbreaking cases of COVID-19 among Americans vaccinated from December 2020 to March 2021.
Comparatively, there were 162 cases – 1.8 times more – among those vaccinated between July 2020 and December 2020.
The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company also reported 13 severe cases in the early vaccination group, compared to six in the latter group.
In addition, there were three Covid hospitalizations and two deaths in the group vaccinated last year against no hospitalizations or deaths in the group vaccinated in winter 2020 and spring 2021.
Moderna says the data provides evidence of booster doses being given to fully vaccinated people.

People who received their first dose last year were more likely to experience severe breakthrough cases, be admitted to hospital, or die compared to those vaccinated from winter 2020 to spring 2021
The data focused on people who participated in Moderna’s Phase 3 COVE study last year and those who received the vaccine after receiving emergency use clearance from the Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) from the United States.
Out of 14,746 people who received the vaccine between July 2020 and December 2020, there were 162 cases of Covid rupture.
In comparison, there were 88 breakthrough cases among 11,431 who received the vaccine from December 2020 to March 2021.
Researchers say that means there is 36% reduced protection of those who received their first dose 13 months ago compared to those who received their initial injection eight months ago.
For both groups, more cases were seen in young adults.

In the 2020 vaccination group, there were 136 breakthrough cases among those aged 18 to 65 and 26 cases were seen among those aged 65 and over.
In the 2020-21 vaccination group, there were 68 breakthrough cases among the young adult group and 20 cases among the elderly.
More severe cases of COVID-19 were seen in the early vaccination group with 13 cases versus six cases in the latter group.
Seven severe cases of breakthrough were reported among those aged 18 to 65 vaccinated last year, compared with six among those 65 and older.
Moderna says this represents a 46% reduction in protection against severe cases among those who received the vaccine about a year ago.
Among the more recently vaccinated group, four cases were in young adults and two in older adults.
And while the group that received their injections last year saw three groundbreaking cases that resulted in hospitalizations and two resulted in death, none occurred among those who received injections this year.
“The increased risk of major infections in … study participants who were vaccinated last year compared to more recently illustrates the impact of decreased immunity and supports the need for a booster to maintain high levels of protection, ”Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said in a press release.
“We hope these results will be useful as health authorities and regulators continue to assess strategies to end this pandemic.”
Moderna also shared data from its clinical trial of people who received booster shots six to eight months after their second dose.
They found that the levels of neutralizing antibodies increased up to 15 times after a month.
Levels even in the elderly – who normally produce much weaker immune responses – were even higher than those recorded immediately after the second dose.
