HONG KONG (AP) – A leading group of scientists said Thursday that it was too early to attempt to make permanent changes to the DNA that future generations will be able to inherit, as claimed a Chinese scientist.

Scientists are participating this week in Hong Kong at the International Summit on Human Genome Publishing, the opportunity to rewrite the code of life to try to correct or prevent disease.

Although science promises to help those who are born, scientists have claimed that it was irresponsible to try it in eggs, sperm or embryos because it is not clear enough about risks or safety.

The conference was eclipsed by the statement of a Chinese researcher who allegedly collaborated to create the world's first genetically modified babies, two twins born earlier this month.
